Job Relationships:
Reports to Chief Operating Officer; Supervises Animal Protection & Control Officers and Dispatchers in the absence of the Chief Operating Officer.

Position Summary:
Responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and supervising the daily activities of the Animal Protection & Control Officers and Dispatchers engaged in operations in the enforcement of animal control ordinances and contract obligations. On call to assist officer and dispatch requests for assistance.

Qualifications:
Minimum 2 years of animal control field experience. Minimum 1 year supervisory experience or progressive leadership experience. Excellent computer skills and familiarity with Word Perfect and Excel software. Minimum education of a college degree or equivalent experience. Must meet requirements to be eligible for and maintain a position as an Animal Protection and Control Officer with the Larimer Humane Society.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are in addition to all duties associated with the position of Animal Protection and Control Officer and Dispatcher.

Daily Operations:
  • Performs the duties of a commissioned Animal Protection & Control Officer or Dispatcher as needed by the department

  • Coordinates Officer’s work schedules and daily work assignments

  • Monitors daily operations of the Animal Protection & Control Department, advising Officers on department and jurisdictional protocol

  • Keeps Chief Operating Officer informed of progress, potential conflicts

    Departmental Operations

  • Assumes the role of department supervisor in the absence of the Chief Operating Officer, providing guidance to Officers and Dispatch personnel

  • Keeps abreast of current industry trends, conducts research as assigned, makes recommendations regarding department protocol and animal-related ordinances

  • Participates in the hiring and evaluation of department staff by giving recommendations regarding employees performance and continued employment

  • Maintains confidential information relating to the department, organization, or clients

  • On call duties to advise and assist APC Officers and Dispatchers

  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by the Chief Operating Officer

    Officer Training Program

  • Develops and implements Field Officer Training Program

  • Certifies FTOs

  • Assigns new Officers to FTOs and monitors progress

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    Ability to achieve State Certification within one year of employment, ability to obtain euthanasia certification and perform euthanasia within one year of employment. Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens. Effective verbal and written communication skills, ability to develop written protocol, ability to work with numbers and compile statistics, interest in computer systems. Ability to prioritize and coordinate work assignments, work in multi-task environment. Ability to direct, train and evaluate employees, set and achieve goals. Exercises good judgement when dealing with the public, employee issues, and animal-related concern. Able to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential information. Knowledge of Larimer County, Fort Collins, Loveland and State ordinances.

    Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
    Work is performed in a shared office environment and outdoors with exposure to noise, animals and all types of weather. Must be able to be on call to assist APC staff verbally or in person. Must be able to work weekends, holidays and any time of the day. Physical demands include sitting and performing data entry/using dispatch radio, answering telephones up to 8 hours per day. Exposure to the elements and high noise level is required. Ability to lift and carry objects/animals weighing up to 75 pounds, frequent lifting and carrying, regular walking, driving, full range of body movements, hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment. Exposure to aggressive animals, zoonotic diseases. Must be able to withstand driving for extended lengths of time. Must be able to drive and talk on radio simultaneously.
