Job Title: Animal Protection & Control Officer
Department: Animal Control
Classification: Full-time, non-exempt
Job Relationships: Supervised by the Director of Animal Protection and Field Services
Job Summary:
Responsible for enforcing the Animal Control Ordinances of jurisdictions contracted with the Larimer Humane Society.
Duties:
Responds to assigned duties regarding animal rescue, public safety and the enforcement of animal ordinances
Investigates reports of animal ordinance violations and conduct follow-up investigations
Assists citizens with interpretation and understanding of animal ordinances , department procedure, & responsible animal guardianship
Issues warnings & legal summons for violations of animal ordinances
Testifies in court cases relating to animal control ordinance violations
Maintains accurate logs, reports, and statistics of daily activity
Responds to requests for assistance from other jurisdictions and departments as assigned
Patrols jurisdictions, initiates contact with citizens & animals to ensure compliance with animal control ordinances and the humane treatment of animals
Performs the duties of Dispatcher as assigned
Represents the Larimer Humane Society and the contracted jurisdictions in a professional and courteous manner at all times
Promotes Society programs, services, and development
Stays abreast of current industry trends, and changes in ordinances/procedures
Keeps Field Supervisor/ Animal Control Manager informed of progress, potential conflicts
Follows all safety rules guidelines to ensure a safe work environment. Takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer client, or animal at risk.
Actively supports co-workers and volunteers and promotes the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission. Provides quality service to customers, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED; effective verbal and written communication skills; basic clerical skills and math skills; able to read and interpret ordinances, ability to prioritize duties within a busy work environment. Ability to relate information to the public and officers in a concise, clear manner. Ability to work in direct contact with aggressive, injured animals.
Valid Colorado Driver’s License and insurable driving record. Eligibility for commission as an Officer.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens, ability to assess situations and identify options, Must be comfortable initiating public contact, relaying information, and providing court room testimony. Knowledge of animal breeds, behavior, and health is helpful as is experience handling aggressive or injured animals. Ability to operate animal control equipment.

Work Environment/ Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a shared office environment and outdoors with exposure to noise and all types of weather. Exposure to aggressive animals, zoonotic diseases. Ability to lift and carry objects/animals weighing up to 75 pounds. Must be able to withstand driving for extended lengths of time. Much lifting, bending, running and sitting is required. Must be able to drive and talk on radio simultaneously. Exposure to the elements and high noise level is required.
